The Australian Water Association’s (AWA) Western Australian Water Awards 2024 were announced on 1st November. The awards night was held at the Ritz Carton at Elizabeth Quay. Moerk Water was nominated for 2 awards on the night – Sustainable Water Innovation for the Wongutha CAPS project and AWA Water Professional of the Year for Moerk Water Managing Director Martin Brezger.
The Wongutha CAPS project was successful in its category “Innovating for Sustainable Water and Environmental Outcomes”. The Wongutha unit produces 4000 L/hr of drinking water for students at an Indigenous Australian Vocational School near Esperance in Western Australia. The feedwater for the unit is saline groundwater. The unit is powered by solar PV with battery backup allowing for 17 hours of daily operation. The reject from the unit is used to irrigate halophytes to create a closed loop water treatment system.
Although Moerk Water’s managing director was not awarded AWA (WA) Water Professional of the Year he was awarded “Highly Commended” in this category. This is great recognition of Martin’s tireless work over the last decade innovating and promoting sustainable water treatment solutions. The Organizational Excellence Award went to Water Corporation, DWER, Murdoch University and Moerk Water for the WaterSmart Farms Water Security project. This project provides groundwater desalination systems to farmers to protect them from the changing climate.
