The Tongan volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai erupted on 15th January 2022. The ejection plume was over 30 km in height and created 15 m high destructive waves.
In addition to displacing an estimated 3000 people, the eruption disrupted water supplies causing T$2.0 million in damages to water and sanitation services.
Moerk Water in partnership with Unicef Pacific delivered two solar powered seawater desalination systems to assist the recovery effort. These community scale units are chemical free and run using 100% renewable energy.
Once the units are installed, Moerk Water will run training sessions for local operators to ensure a constant supply of clean water for the communities.
