Water supply for PNG Freight Company

ABOUT THE PROJECT

A PNG freight company based in Port Moresby needed secure water supplies at two of their sites. A reliable source of clean water was needed on both sites for drinking, washing trucks and irrigation. Both sites had groundwater sources with different contaminants but no treatment infrastructure in place.

The first site had brackish groundwater which required desalination to achieve the required water quality. Following the analysis of the groundwater, Moerk Water engineers designed a 1,500 L/hr brackish water reverse osmosis system which dropped the feed salinity from 3,500 mg/L to around 200 mg/L. The system runs at high recovery to reduce the volume of waste produced. The system can produce 35,000 L/day of potable water.

The second site also had contaminated groundwater. The water analysis, also performed by a local laboratory in Port Moresby, identified that this groundwater source was not contaminated with salt, instead it was microbiologically contaminated. For these contaminants, Moerk Water installed a UV irradiation system with inline filtration using 2 LED based UV lamps. LED UV lamps are mercury free, durable and have no warm up time. The UV system also can produce 35,000 L/day of purified water.

The two units have been installed and are currently operating, giving the freight company a secure source of water to aid their operations.

Project Outcomes:

  • Water supply for PNG freight company was secured
  • Two different Moerk Water groundwater treatment systems were delivered (a UV filtration unit and a brackish groundwater treatment system)
  • The systems were designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing site based water network
